Aburi Botanical Gardens
Cool air and old trees, forty-five minutes uphill from Accra when the traffic allows.

Laid out in 1890 on a ridge above the city, Aburi is where Accra goes when Accra is too hot. The gardens themselves are unhurried rather than spectacular: enormous old trees, long avenues, a lot of shade.
The drive up the Aburi road is half the point, and the craft market at the top is one of the better places in the country to buy carving without being hard-sold.
Go on a weekday. Weekends fill up with day-trippers from Accra.
