Cape Coast Castle
The reason a great many people come home in the first place. Give it a guide and a whole morning.

A UNESCO World Heritage site and one of about forty slave-trading forts built along this coast. The tour takes you through the governor's quarters and then down into the male and female dungeons and out through the Door of No Return.
Go with a guide. The building on its own will not tell you what happened in it, and the guides here are the reason people describe this as the most affecting few hours of their trip.
It is emotionally heavy. Plan something gentle afterwards rather than stacking another site on top of it.
